Michael de Forest developed The Suture Series in part from his interest in making forms out of segments. Up to this point all his work had been furniture and related functional objects but he had been thinking about the processes that would allow him to make some three dimensional forms that would be hollow, cut into segments, and stitched back together. When an opportunity came about to be part of the ‘Turned Multiples III’ wood turning show in Philadelphia and St. Louis in Spring 2003, he saw it as a way to begin developing some of these ideas. It was also an opportunity to work in a smaller more intimate scale than chairs, tables, and cabinets. |
